October Newsletter

29th October 2011

I am a month in to my studies here in Oxford and I wanted to send you an update of all the exciting things that have been happening!

OCCA

There are 24 of us representing over 10 nations forming the most unlikely of groups yet it is clear to see the common bonds and connections that we already had before meeting one another. By now it feels that we have known each other for a long time.

The studies have started in earnest and the papers have been rolling on, one after the other. I feel so privileged to be here. The men and women that I have read about, based talks on etc. – these people are now my lecturers! As I look back over my notes my jaw drops again. I could spend a paragraph just name dropping (check out the blog for more of that!). The collective wisdom that has been amassed, the experience of men and women who have committed their lives to proclaim Christ to this world is being offered to us. The reality is as sobering as it is humbling. We are truly been given much and with this comes responsibility.

I am being stretched and added to in great measure. It is so good to be back learning again once more!

Church

Part of my time this year is on placement with a local church. I am with Emmanuel Church and having a blast. They are a great church: young, vibrant and clearly on mission both here in Oxford and overseas too. I am co-leading an Alpha Course programme introducing people (mostly students) to the Christian faith, some for the first time, and dealing with questions that they faith. Please pray for this – see below!

Oxford Life

Aside from church and studies there is so much to be involved with here in Oxford! I have started rowing for Queen’s College – our sister college – which mostly entails early starts, blisters and blokes on bikes shouting at us! But it is all worth it. It is great to hang out with undergrad guys and a fantastic discipline both physically and mentally.

There are unions, clubs, talks, museums, pubs (including the Eagle and Child where Messrs. Lewis & Tolkien et al would imbibe a pint or two). There is a real buzz about this city. It’s a happening, nation-shaping city and to be a part of it, to walk in it, pray for it and hopefully contribute to it is a fantastic privilege.

I am going to commit to updating my blog every Friday with a weekly review and hope to blog more in general as time affords! It is busy, busy, busy yet there is matching levels of energy to see it all done. God’s grace is sufficient!

Prayer Points

Here’s a list of current prayer and finacial needs. If you’d like more specifics, let me know!

  • I’m co-leading an Alpha course. We’ve had great questions and a real openness so far. Pray that the Holy Spirit continues to open up hearts and minds.
  • Please pray for natural opportunities to share the gospel with the guys I row with. It’s a great place to get alongside undergrad guys.

Financial Needs

  • I have raised about half of my tuition costs but have a further £7,000 left to pay. This includes mission trips and some materials.
  • Other materials, books – see my Amazon wish list if you’d like to help this way!
  • General living costs.

Until next time friends!

Onwards and Upwards,

Jonathan
